Buckden Library is located in the Millennium Community Centre in Burberry
Road, Buckden and offers a wide range of services and facilities to its members including
the loan or hire of:
- Books
- CDs
- Videos
- Music cassettes
- Language cassettes
In addition, we also have several networked computers that library members can use to search for a particular book or use to access the Internet.
Our books, CDs, videos and cassettes cover a wide range of subjects and a
wide range of age groups. Children are most welcome in the library.
As part of the Cambridgeshire Libraries & Information Service, Buckden
Library offers members access to a network of 40 libraries, over 1 million
books, videos and CDs, and a growing range of computer based information
services. The library is also linked to the Cambook library computer system
which can give immediate information on the availability of over 400,000
separate titles in Cambridgeshire libraries.
Membership
- Membership is free and there are no age limits.
- Everyone who lives and works in Cambridgeshire, or lives in a neighbouring
authority, may join.
- Please bring 2 proofs of your name, address and signature to the library.
- Under 18s need a guarantor who can show similar proofs of identity.
- Look after membership cards (usually a Cambook card) - let us know if they
are stolen - or of any change of name and address.
Borrowing
- Remember your library membership card.
- You may borrow up to 12 items at one time.
- All book loans are free, as long as you return them on time - the loan
period is 3 weeks.
- A charge is made for videos, cassettes, CDs etc. - the hire period is 1
week.
- Some categories of borrower are exempt from charge. (See 'Exemptions'
below.)
Returning
- Items borrowed from Buckden Library, may be returned to
any Cambook library.
- Items borrowed on your membership card are your responsibility - on
return, please wait for them to be checked in.
- There is a charge for items which are returned late - a list of charges is
displayed in the library.
Renewals
- Avoid overdue charges by renewing books before they are due back.
- You may renew books up to 3 times, providing no-one else has asked for
them.
- Just present your membership card, or quote the card number over the
telephone (see below).
- Hired items such as CDs and videos do not need to be renewed - you simply
pay for the extra weeks you use.
Telephone renewals
Books may be renewed over the telephone at any library in Cambridgeshire that
supports the Cambook card. The telephone numbers of the libraries can be found at the following address:

Internet renewals
If you have access to a computer then it may be more convenient to renew via the Internet. To do so you will need your Cambook card and your PIN
number. (The library staff will be able to provide you with a PIN number,
however, do remember to bring your Cambook card with you!)

Exemptions (to charges)
If you fit into one of the following categories you are entitled to free
request, videos, CDs, music cassettes and CDRoms. You
will also not have to pay overdue charges:
'Housebound' - someone who cannot access a static or mobile library, for
example because of mobility problems or ill health. She/he may be served by a
friend, relative or neighbour or by The Doorstep Service through its volunteer
Library Visitors.
'Print disabled' - someone who is unable to read a standard print book in
the ordinary way, for example because of a physical, sensory or learning
difficulty or a condition such as:
- someone who has difficulty using their upper limbs;
- someone who is blind/ visually impaired;
- an Adult Basic Skills (ABS) student;
- someone who has dyslexia;
- someone with Alzheimer's Disease.
Proof will be needed to claim exemptions. Please speak to a member of staff
for further information.
Reserving
Books can be requested by yourself via terminals in the library or via the
Internet. You will not need to pay any reservation fee until the book arrives.
