A14 LATEST NEWS

The Parish Council understands that there are many in the village who believe that nothing further can be done about the proposed plans for the A14. Whilst it is true that it is unlikely that the actual route can be changed drastically the Council's proposals for no traffic through Buckden to the tip and Brampton and the retention of the link under the A1 and proposed new A14 to the tip and Brampton have been accepted. We have also argued successfully that the new road should be configured in such a way as to allow a future A1 bypass to the west of the village to join easily.

The remaining problem does not affect the village but does have a large detrimental effect on those living there who wish to travel to Hinchingbrooke School, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Huntingdon and the Railway Station. This is the proposal to demolish the A14 viaduct at the railway station and to deny through traffic a route on the existing A14. The Parish Council has argued most strongly that the retention of the existing A14 after the completion of the new road would allow easier through traffic movement from North to East and vice versa and also provide a relief road in the event of a blockage on the new road.

The proposals supported by Huntingdon District Council will on their own admission create more traffic delays at 'rush hour' periods especially on the Brampton Road and Ermine Street areas. By vigorously dissuading 'through traffic' from using the roads through the town will also make it more difficult for local drivers to move around and through Huntingdon. The proposals will also have a possible knock-on effect on Buckden roads in the event of any accident on the A14 (the retention of the present A14 would allow for a relief route). The Parish Council is also concerned about the possible long-term environmental problems that may arise from the increase in slow moving and stationary traffic especially on the Brampton Road. There are also questions concerning the long-term economic issues.

One of the main reasons for the District council's determination to demolish the viaduct appears to be a greater vision for an expanded Huntingdon town centre and building development on the land that will be made available if the A14 is cut. There will be exhibitions called "A Vision For Huntingdon Town Centre" in

All Saints Church, Market Square, Huntingdon on:

    Thursday14th September 4.00pm to 8.00pm
    Saturday16th September10.00am to 3.00pm
    Wednesday 20th September10.00am to 8.00pm
    Saturday23rd September10.00am to 3.00pm
And at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Godmanchester on:
    Tuesday     19th September 4.00pm to 8.00pm

These exhibitions are not specifically about the A14 but there will be displays to illustrate the District Council's intentions and hopefully some reasoned explanations as to why they want to demolish a near motorway standard road and inflict greater traffic chaos on those drivers, cyclists and pedestrians trying to reach Hinchingbrooke School, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, the Railway Station and Town Centre and at the same time create a situation whereby greater environmental contamination may occur . All this for the sake of a "Vision"

The Parish Council urges you to visit one of these exhibitions and ask the question "WHY?" Unless these questions are answered adequately the construction of the much-needed new A14 may be delayed even further.
